This is probably in the wrong place but does anyone know if and how reptiles can tell air pressure differences or predict the weather, for example my turtles are sitting out on their basking area yet the temps are still very low, the sun hasn't gotten around there yet, probably won't for at least another couple of hours, but I know from the forecast it will be sunny today, other times I won't see them at all and its a rainy or miserable day, they seem to be as good at telling me the weather as the forecaster, do they have a means of telling a pressure rise or could it be something else

its the same with alot of animals

the main one being the banded woolly bear caterpillar

like the tsumi not long ago...laods of people die but very very few wild animals died. it was noted many wild animals deserted the coast line days before hand.

Studies have been done and no one knows why.

BUT as for ur turtles getting ready to bask, thats simple...Infra red heat is given off from the suns temperture...its not a heat u feel in the airs temperture but it warms living objects up...reptiles are ectotherms and they can feel this alot and no when this gets warmer its a build up to somehting...and the hottest part for a reptile is there basking area so they no they need to get ready to bask...they arent aware the sun is coming out, they just no they need to get ready to bask as its gonna get warmer

as for air pressure,,,,many reptiles die in plane transit as there ears cant stand such high pressure

thanks christian I assumed as nice weather come with high pressure thats what they were sensing, anyway they've been basking all day even though the sun has gone now they are still there, for days I'll not see them and the weather will be cloudy/wet/cold etc but if there out its usually going to have some sun, I should use them for days out, they remind me of the china ornaments you used to get and either the boy or the girl would change colour depending on the weather although I don't suppose you remember them my nana always had one, don't know how good they were though.
